SCC launch Dragon Cavern Cheddar at Royal Welsh Show
A new Dragon Cheddar that has been developed by South Caernarfon Creameries in partnership with Llechwedd Slates Caverns will be officially launched at the Royal Welsh Show 21 – 24 July 2014. The Creamery has adopted a very traditional maturing method with the cheese being transported from their Chwilog base to the Slate Cavern in Blaenau Ffestiniog and left to mature 500 feet underground.
This maturation process, believed to be in the steepest mining maturation caverns, adds unique characteristics to the cheese; a firmer body and depth of flavour with rich savoury notes. Visitors to the Royal Welsh Show will be available to taste the cheddar for themselves as South Caernarfon Creameries’ will be holding tastings throughout the day from their stand in the Food Hall.
The cheese, is presented in a 200g pack under South Caernarfon Creameries’ own Dragon brand and will be available to buy at the show. The cheese will also be stocked at Llechwedd Slate Cavern’s shop.
“We have worked in partnership with Llechwedd Slate Caverns in the development of this new cheese; being produced at our cheese making facility in Chwilog and then matured deep in the mine at Blaenau Ffestiniog. The whole process really does highlight our Welsh Heritage” explains Alan Wyn-Jones, Managing Director at South Caernarfon Creameries. “The Royal Welsh Show will provide us with a platform to showcase the new cheese. We are very pleased with the fabulous eating quality of the cheese and look forward to gauge consumer reaction before we launch the product under our Dragon range of cheeses.”
